SA: Pacific solution working well, says Ruddock
Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK has defended his government's so-called Pacificsolution in the face of drug charges against guards at an Australian detention camp inNauru.
Mr RUDDOCK says three people employed by the international organisation for migrationto carry out the supervisory arrangements on Nauru have been charged with drug offences.
Mr RUDDOCK's told ABC radio he doesn't know the status of the charges, but is likelyto check that during the course of the day.
He says the people are no longer employed by IOM and have been removed from Nauru.
Labor Immigration spokeswoman NICOLA ROXON says the charges have highlighted the problemswith detaining asylum seekers overseas.
But Mr RUDDOCK says the Pacific solution's been a great success in the sense that therehad been very large numbers of unauthorised border arrivals before the policy was implemented.
