Fed: Costello, Howard in pre-election show of unity

CANBERRA, Aug 31 AAP - Treasurer Peter Costello and Prime Minister John Howard have
put on a public show of unity, with Mr Costello ruling out challenging for the leadership
during the next three years.

Mr Howard, 65, has continually refused to promise to serve out a full three years if
he wins the October 9 election.

But at a joint media conference with Mr Howard, Mr Costello ruled out a challenge and
said he was running for the position of treasurer, not prime minister.

"I have ruled out challenging. I am not challenging. Would you like anything else?"

Mr Costello said.

"In the next three years I am seeking to be treasurer in the government to serve under
Mr Howard, and that's what I am doing, and ruling out challenging."

Meanwhile, Mr Howard has proposed one televised debate for the campaign, to be held
on Sunday September 12 and to feature a panel of journalists.

Mr Howard's proposed debate would be hosted by the Nine Network and Ray Martin.

Mr Latham has asked for three televised debates, and to have one of those debates held
in conjunction with a community forum, to be televised by the Seven Network.
