SOMERS, N.Y., Oct. 10, 1995--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IBM today announced enhancements in hardware, software or services in each of its four server families -- PC Servers, AS/400(a), RS/6000(a) and S/390(a) -- adding more robust, easy-to-use solutions to an already unmatched server line up.
"The common theme linking each of these announcements is ease-of-use," said Nicholas M. Donofrio, senior vice president and group executive, IBM Server Group. "We're making it easier for customers to get a total solution by redesigning software packages, offering them with increased hardware choices and improving our services. We are indeed moving all four of our platforms forward to more open, reliable, scalable, client/server computing."
New PC Servers provide wider selection of sizes and architectures
The IBM PC Server family today added new models of entry- and mid-size PC Servers -- the PC Server 310 line and the PC Server 520 line -- plus new models in the PC Server 320 line.
The IBM PC Server business unit now offers combinations of bus architectures (PCI/EISA, PCI/Micro Channel, PCI/ISA) across product lines so that customers can migrate more easily from their current applications to those based on the newest standard -- PCI.
Also announced today are new releases of NetFinity(a), IBM's premier software package for managing systems and assets, and ServerGuide(a), the CD-ROM package that makes it easier to install network operating systems on IBM PC Servers.
Each PC Server supports multiple operating systems including IBM's OS/2(a) for SMP, Novell(b) NetWare(b), SCO(b) UNIX(b) and Microsoft(b) Windows(b) NT. To reduce cost of ownership, IBM is offering NetFinity, a member of the IBM SystemView(a) family, with each of its newly announced PC Servers at no extra charge.
Client/server applications give AS/400 Advanced Series customers an edge
Growing numbers of businesses are stockpiling, or warehousing, data from everyday transactions, then analyzing, or mining, it for trends that could improve business decisions. IBM today unveiled solutions to help AS/400 customers do this with simplicity, speed and scalability.
Users can get quick answers with DB2 Multisystem(a) for OS/400, which distributes database queries over 128 processors on 32 networked AS/400 systems. Similarly, DB2 Symmetric Multiprocessing(a) for OS/400 spreads database queries over multiple processors on single AS/400 SMP systems that use one centralized database, accelerating responses fourfold.
IBM is also making it easier for individual retail branches to do in-store processing -- so they can be more responsive to local competition and customer preferences. AS/400 retail customers will be able to accomplish this with object-oriented StorePlace(a) applications and related services, which IBM will make available for AS/400 under a joint project agreement.
IBM is also announcing a new high-end AS/400 Advanced Server. Powered by four PowerPC AS(a) A30 microprocessors, the fastest system (model 53S) extends the range of AS/400 Advanced Server family by 330% -- making it suitable for small to very large client/server environments.
RS/6000 workgroup server and packaged solutions available
IBM today announced a low-cost entry point into the world of RISC workgroup servers with the new RS/6000 Model E20. The E20, based on a standard PCI bus, is ideally suited for departmental application support and can easily be integrated into PC LAN environments using the new AIX Connections(a) feature available in AIX Version 4.1.4. This feature provides networking support for a wide range of PC clients and LAN architectures, allowing clients based on a variety of popular operating systems to access the services of the RS/6000 server. AIX 4.1.4 also supports a range of new connectivity options, making it easier to connect to the RS/6000.
To help customers easily "surf the 'Net", AIX Version 4.1.4 also includes an Internet browser facility. What's more, a new Internet offering, the first in a series planned by IBM, packages RS/6000 hardware with optional IBM or Netscape(b) Internet server software as a turnkey solution. This allows customers to use this exciting new medium to simply promote their products/services or even conduct commerce with their customers and/or suppliers. IBM also announced new multimedia products, including Starworks(b) for AIX, to make it easier for customers to deploy innovative audio-, video- and image-based applications in client/server environments. Several high-speed, high-capacity storage options were also introduced that can improve customer access to their increasing amounts of data.
Customers also benefit from increased 3D graphics performance with a new graphics accelerator adapter, which allows attachment of the high-performance, high-function POWER GXT1000 graphics accelerator to the low-cost, PCI bus-based RS/6000 Model 43P workstation.
Dozens of products & features included in new S/390 server environment
As part of S/390's recent software transformation strategy, IBM today announced its intent to replace the MVS/ESA(a) operating system and 30 other related software products with a single, integrated open server system. OS/390 relieves customers of the time-consuming, resource-demanding difficulties associated with the ordering, installation, testing, and maintenance of more than 30 separate products and features.
Customers' IT staffs and resources benefit from a single, pre-tested server system that has both UNIX and MVS capabilities and provides for easier, more timely application development and deployment. Customer and solution developer planning and development are now more predictable than ever and the customer's total cost of ownership is reduced.
OS/390 combines the industry's most advanced technologies and services, such as client/server, object-oriented and UNIX/open capabilities with the classic strengths of MVS, the robust operating system that runs thousands of companies and industries throughout the world. An early customer assessment of OS/390 has estimated up to a 60% reduction in their installation process alone.
Release 1 of OS/390 is scheduled to be generally available in 1Q96.
IBM's Server Families
IBM's four server platforms -- PC Server, AS/400, RS/6000 and System/390 -- are designed to work with each other and with the systems of other vendors through adherence to defacto and industry standards, as described in IBM's Open Blueprint. They also reflect a relentless drive to maximize the use of common technology, subsystems and software across IBM platforms.
At the same time, the four server platforms retain and build on the individual strengths that have made each of them winners in the marketplace. Those strengths address the different "styles" of computing that our customers have told us they prefer, which can be summarized as: smart PC networking (PC Server), advanced computing made simple (AS/400), scalable UNIX performance (RS/6000) and large scale robustness (S/390).
As a result, IBM offers what no company in the industry can offer: a team of servers designed to meet every customer need, regardless of where customers are on the road to open client/server computing.
IBM Customer Financing Available
IBM customer financing organizations worldwide help customers acquire information technology. These organizations offer an array of convenient and flexible financing options for customers acquiring IBM PC Servers, AS/400, RS/6000 and System/390 technology. In the U.S., IBM Credit Corporation offers below- prime rate financing for selected server products and various technology upgrade programs. All of these options can lower the customers' cost of acquisition and protect against technological obsolescence. For more information, contact a local IBM marketing representative.
